I was very happy for my mother when I found out that Cindy was coming to visit. It was late June. I had finished school for the year and had not found a summer job yet -- although I was in no hurry to accomplish that. Mom was still getting over her divorce from my father almost a year ago and she desperately needed to have some fun. I had tried my best to bring her out of the doldrums that she was in, but I guess there's only so much an eighteen year-old son can do. I was hoping that a week with Cindy was what she needed to rejuvenate herself.

Kirsten was not a bad person. She was a good person who had done a very bad thing. She wasn't sure how it had happened really. Ok, maybe she knew how it had happened, but she regretted that it had. More than that, she was furious with herself for allowing it to happen, for initiating it in the first place.

Michael was in the kitchen when she came home. His work hours let him get there an hour before she did, on average, a chance to get his directed chores done before she came home on the days she required him at her house. He was naked, except for the soft black manacles that encircled each wrist and ankle, because that's how she wanted him whenever he was in the house. He had just finished washing the floors and was putting away the bucket when Cheryl came through the door.
