I guess I should start with a little history. I was born in the late 60's. My dad was a United States Marine. I had a fairly average childhood, went to college, and joined the corps as soon as I graduated. Shortly after I joined the corps dad and mom came to visit. They had some news. Mom was pregnant. Soon after she had my twin sisters Rose and Lily. Being so much older and being on active duty I didn't get to spend much time with my sisters as they grew. Time past and I was doing well in my career.

I was pissed off. See, I was supposed to head up to Canada with my buddies from university and spend our winter break snowboarding, but things never seem to turn out the way I plan. Instead my dad pulled rank and ordered me home for Christmas. He insisted that I should learn some values and spend "quality time" with my mother and sister.

During the next few days Rich and I worked at the landscaping company together, but he was distant. We hardly talked and when we did, even at home, it was in short, cordial sentences. It was totally unlike Rich to behave this way, so by the middle of the week I wanted to have a talk with him. After work we got home, and our parents were traveling for a few days so we had the house to ourselves. I made some dinner and at the table I decided it was time to talk.

Let's get this out there. I am a total geek. I absolutely love video games and am totally addicted to World of Warcraft. I play it every chance I get. I am by no means a bad looking guy, but this game has a hold on me. I prefer to live in my virtual world as opposed to living in the real one.

I'm still working on the behemoth stories. Here's something I poked at in the meantime, and I spit this one out pretty quick, too. Hope there aren't too many errors. For those that like their fiction hard, this probably isn't your sauce. No worries, I have that coming. I do appreciate the comments and criticisms. It's helping, I hope.

I'd not been home in over four years.

As my folks had divorced while I was in my senior year of college, I'd gone straight to work at a hedge fund in Connecticut. I guess I chose the job to put as much distance between all the family pain and myself as I could. I of course sent the obligatory greeting cards on holidays and birthdays, both to my parents and my sister, but other than a few phone calls from my mother, I'd stayed as far away from home and my emotions as I could manage.

My heart started to pick up speed as the bus got closer and closer to Brawly. The road was framed with beautiful fields of green and yellow. Tractors and trailers were moving around carrying farm supplies and farm workers to their designated destinations. Many fields were shimmering under the bright afternoon sun, indicating the presence of water as the irrigation canals emptied into them. Rows of white birds were spread all over those fields, searching for food and maybe even socializing at the local watering holes.

I desperately needed to use the bathroom. I always drink a big glass of water before going to bed, and in the mornings, I always wake up with a full bladder. Normally, that's not a problem, since the house in which I live with my mother and older sister has two bathrooms between the three of us. But the master bath was having plumbing problems. So that left the hall bathroom.

Connor Franks arrived at tiny Municipal Airport in Owens Mill a day ahead of Thanksgiving. His trip from Syracuse University in New York had led him on a series of connecting flights and long bus rides. Fortunately he had found a little charter airline that would fly him over the mess of a snowstorm that had crippled the great plains and cancelled his scheduled landing in Wichita.
