As the only female doctor on staff at the health center of a large midwestern university, my work has afforded me numerous occasions when I'm asked (even begged) to describe certain of my work experiences to "the girls"---four girlfriends whom I've known since college. We gather three or so times a year at a spa or for a cruise or just to kick back for a few days away from husbands and boyfriends and, now, a couple of kids among us.

"Oh my god, it's huge!" Audrey exclaimed, unable to take her eyes from the package. "I thought you were going to get one for beginners."
James looked up distractedly, then went back to opening his own packages. "Don't worry, I did. You won't be starting on that one. You gotta work your way up." After a moment, he tossed aside an empty package and held up a short, thinner probe with a flared base. "This is the one you'll be starting on."

The phone woke me from a focused stupor as my secretary let me know a call was on the line. Talking to whomever it was on the phone, anyone, would be a welcome relief from reading through the boring minutiae of the commercial pre-lease agreement in my hands.
"Paul Sturner on the phone for you, Max."
Paul Sturner? Now there was a blast from the past. Paul and I had worked together in the mid 90s when he was still running a large construction concern in midtown.

You know that feeling you get when you're on that terrible amusement park ride, Tower of Terror or Freefall or whatever they call it- where they lift you up and then drop you out of the blue (literally) and your stomach flies up into your heart and your heart flies right out of your mouth?
That's the feeling I get when I meet my husband's angry gaze, and that anger is directed at me.

It was a quiet afternoon at the office. My last appointment for the day had to cancel at the last minute, and the bosses were all at a convention out of town. Nothing was happening, and although it was a good time to catch up on paperwork, I was tired so I thought I'd get an early start on the weekend. I didn't expect my girlfriend, Paola, to be home when I got there, so I was surprised to hear the television when I walked through the door.

Looking back to the summer I was eighteen I realize I was immature in many ways. For one thing, most kids my age had graduated from high school, but I still had a year to go. I missed most of fifth grade recovering from an auto accident and had to repeat it. It set me back socially as well. I was shy and still felt like an awkward adolescent. As far as sex goes, I would say that at that point I was omnisexual. Everything in the whole damn world turned me on!

It was dark. It was raining. I was tired.
I was also nervous. I considered calling the whole thing off, but it was too late now.
She was waiting.
I peered through the rain spattered windshield, between the squeaking wipers in a vain attempt to make out the names written on the overhead street signs.
"I really should get some glasses," I muttered to myself as my eyes squinted to see through the driving rain.
