During the spring semester, I played volleyball in a local co-ed recreational league. I was invited to join by Renee, a former student and player I coached, a sweet girl and an awesome outside hitter who's since become one of my closer friends. Rounding out the team was her boyfriend, Jesse, Rachel, a teammate of Renee's from the college they now attend, and two of Jesse's buds, John and Daniel. With each of the women on our team having played competitively in the past, we did very well throughout the season.

The first time I saw Ellen Rothko was when I walked into Boyle's Antiques on Clark Street, looking for old records. She was showing a woman some antique earrings, their heads bent over the display case, and when she heard me come in she looked up and caught my eye, shocked me with her beauty, and then lowered her face again, leaving me standing there gaping like an idiot.

Brian, Jesse, and I have been friends for well over a decade; we came out of high school at the same time, they as a couple and me looking, as I am still.
Brian and I are alike in stature, slightly over 6 feet and 200 lbs. Jesse is a petite blonde bombshell with a runners body and hair that reached her middle back. The thing is though, she bugs me.

Way back when, when I was young, dumb, and one summer very lucky. I was in my second year at the local Community College, and working a summer job at a local condo resort. It could have been worse; I was doing room service, and at least the tips were pretty good. Or so I thought until this one particular day, when pretty good became absolutely mind-blowing!
Earlier that day I'd taken a late breakfast down to one of the units with its own pool and private patio.

I arrived at my Alaskan destination after four different flights, including one float plane. It was late in the evening but the sun wasn't cooperating; the natural lighting made it seem about 5pm. I was due to start a new seasonal job the following day. My first impression of my new "home" was positive: the air was brisk and clean, the snow looked pristine, and three absolute hunks came out of the bunkhouse to help me with my luggage!

Laura and I had arrived in Jamaica only four hours before. We hadn’t been ballsy enough to bring our own pot and decided that we needed to look for some. As everyone knows, the island is swimming in the stuff and we didn’t think there would be any problem.

My two best guy friends, Jake and Derek, came over that Saturday morning to cheer me up. I poured three cups of fresh coffee and set out a plate of danishes, a sinful treat in honor of my being dumped by Stephen, my boyfriend of three years.
Neither Jake nor Derek had the decency to look like they felt bad for me.
"What you need," Jake said, as he chewed on a cheese danish, "is to purge him from your system."

"Can I help you?" the woman at the front desk of the hotel asked.
"I have a reservation. Tonya Benton."
The woman's smile faded a little as she clicked away on the computer. After a few seconds, she said, "I'm terribly sorry, but we don't have any rooms available."
Tonya gave a shake of her head, tossing her red curls, in disbelief of what she'd just heard. "What? I have a reservation. I made it a month ago."

The evening sky was painted vivid colors of crimson, yellow, purple and azure. The sun was just passing over the horizon completely. I was anxious, alright, I was downright scared. What had I agreed to? What was it that made me want to be on the "list" for eight and a half months?
As I walked down the crowded avenue, I wondered if anyone could tell what I was about to do.

Remodeling was a bitch. It had started relatively small. Switching light bulbs. Resealing the windows. Upgrading appliances. But new appliances needed a new look, so there was the bamboo flooring. And finally, in a fit of Al Gore-induced guilt, getting those solar panels. But, despite the cost and the months of having her house in complete disarray, Kat had to admit they had a major benefit beyond energy efficiency. The installation had necessitated hiring a pair of seriously hot contractors.
