I can see her watching me. Pretending not to, casting her eyes down to the novel in front of her every time I catch her eye from across the patio of this open-air café. Well, I've been watching her, too—long enough to know that she's been "reading" the same page for the last 45 minutes.

Finn rolled over on the pavement as he started to feel lightheaded. His eyes shifted restlessly in their sockets, watching as countless pedestrians stepped carelessly past his weakening form. They side-stepped, creeping around his huddled body as if he were vermin. He wanted to spit at them. He wanted to give them all something to really be afraid of.

I have known Miss Bobby for a very long time. We've always been friends foremost and lovers just for the fun of it. She worked at a club I visited whenever I was in town. She drank for a living, meaning she worked for the bat so the customers would buy her drinks and stick around longer. I would hang around until she got off and then we would go somewhere else to party.

I had left New Haven early in the morning to take my sister's BMW to her in Little Rock. By the time I was halfway through Tennessee it was late and I was exhausted. I pulled into a twenty-four hour department store which will remain nameless (I'm not having a bunch of Arkansas lawyers coming after me). I had heard that travelers and truckers sometimes sleep in their parking lots, although the company discourages it.

She was somebody else's date. I'd met her when they arrived. She was his arm candy for the evening. Of the fifteen or so people in my home, she was the one that caught my interest. It was obvious from the moment I opened the door she knew who I was and she was interested. Others may have thought I was a curiosity or maybe interesting, but she was interested.
