Maddie Sturm gripped the front of her coat and held it tightly shut under her chin as she quickly walked across the Hurricane Box Company parking lot. It had been the coldest winter in years in Hurricane, West Virginia and Maddie couldn't wait for spring.
Maddie shuffled gingerly through the newly fallen snow. She never tied her size five Timberlands, and she was trying not to get snow down inside them.

"Kathryn?"
I heard her sigh.
"Yes Mike, it's me. Kevin is fading, he may not last the day. Will you come?"
"I'll call back just as soon as I can confirm my flight. Hold on."
Kathryn was his old personal assistant, but was more than that. She was more like the mother he never got to have. While most walked around him fearfully, she chided him for scaring the employees.

It's going to be a surprise. I just hope it's a pleasant one. I really shouldn't be going. But I'm at my wits end and can't stop myself. It's been over two months of denial -- not that there haven't been others, I've let a few virile studs demonstrate their might on several one-nighters, but he's the one I'm really interested in.
I'm mindless to the chill as I stride along. It's already dark, drizzle permeating the air in a fine spray, a damp Christmas Eve with no chance of it snowing, no way to pretty things up.

Attorney at Law, K. Anderson never smiled. In fact, she never showed much emotion at all.
Stoic.
Poker face.
She was rumored to be cold hearted and vicious. Whether she actually was or not, ultimately was irrelevant. She was one of the most powerful attorneys this side of the Mississippi river, a senior partner in one of the most influential law firms in the country, Benter, Johnson, Anderson and Holgate. She had everything money could buy, though she never struck him as the flashy type.

Robyn sat alone on the railing of the massive sun deck and heaved a sigh of general discontent. Attending the engagement party of a fellow college alum while accompanied by your own future mother-in-law was certainly not her idea of a hot summer Saturday at the Jersey shore.
Robyn had never been one of those young women to revel in these 'girlie-girl' type celebrations, anyway, although Robyn herself wore a nearly two-carat diamond engagement ring on her own left hand.

"Passion rules us all," someone once said. "And we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments."
And I know, in my time with Alexandra, these are some of those finest moments. Also, the most terrifying.
Summer. New Orleans. She and I are facing each other, lying on a bed in our second-story room at a small European-like pension.

Adam hadn't seen Mrs. Ford in a couple of weeks although the memory of the late evening they had spent in her back yard was still vivid in his mind. He had agonized over whether or not he should get in touch with her. He thought of calling her and asking if she needed someone to clean her pool, but then he would cringe at the sexual overtones that were so obvious in such an offer. Ultimately he decided that it was unlikely that his mother's best friend would want him calling her up like some moon struck teenager which was, in fact, pretty much what he was.

I remember one summer when I went out to the ranch of my friend Amanda's uncle. This was her father's youngest brother, making him around 40 at the time. We had just finished our third year of college and we were borderline ADD from the joy of completing our finals.
We drove up on a hot, hot day in late April, and by the time we arrived at the ranch both of us were covered in sweat and dust.

When I was fifteen, my parents enrolled me in an SAT prep course hoping in their usual Asian fashion that it would help me achieve the score necessary to give them bragging rights over their other Asian friends' kids. Personally, I thought this was going to be the biggest waste of time, but as with many things in my pre-college life, I did as my parents ordered, realizing it was useless to fight.
