For most people, a time comes, sometime along the way, where they find themselves in an economic jam. Something happens, something comes up, something goes amiss, and extra money is needed to fix it. Things like this can happen to even the most careful and responsible planners. Like Tara Smith.

Karen glanced at the clock, frowned, and realized she had probably missed the director of accounting by fifteen minutes. It was 6:45 in the evening, she was hungry and stressed, and this folder of papers was promised to be on his desk before he left the building. She picked up her phone and dialed the extension of his assistant. Three rings ... four ... voicemail. No one there. She pushed the handset hard into the plastic cradle in frustration, slid her feet back into her high-heeled shoes beneath the broad oak desk and pushed up from her tall, black leather seat.

"Just take it," my best friend whispered in my ear before switching aisles. Like a pro, she pocketed a pack of gummy bears to go with a bag of chips.
It stunned me that she could be so apathetic about the whole thing. Stealing? I'd never stolen anything in my life -- not even first base! Yet with nervous hands, I picked up a little baggie of Swedish fish, and looked towards the register. The man there was sitting with his feet up on the counter and his head down, staring into a home and gardening magazine.

My name is Kay. I'm a 31 year-old, happily un-married middle-class white woman with a marvelous life - except for being addicted to sex. Maybe it's only the risk factor that I'm addicted to. I honestly don't know, but I do know I'll sometimes take awful risks to anonymously and spontaneously fuck total strangers. There, now that I have that part out of the way maybe I can also be honest with the rest of what I want to explain.

Summer was here. It was time for my parents to ship me off to the shoebox that was my uncle's apartment. This time was different, however. I had just turned 18, which meant I would finally have some freedoms.

The steady beat of an axe on wood echoed through the forest, loud in the absence of animals. It was foreign here, the first sounds of a long train of newcomers. It was wrong. For thousands of years the animals and their kin had run these lands, living in harmony with the forests and rivers that ran through it. Now man was coming, and with man came change. With man came war. With man, inevitably, would come death.

We'd been playing around, doing this and that, when she slowly rolled over and gradually pulled her knees up under her tummy, head down on the pillow.
"What are you waiting for?" She was just itching for it.
"I'm just looking."
She glanced back and gave me a low growl. "And you like what you see?"

Peaches, peaches everywhere but not a bite to eat.
I was pondering upon my existence and lack of life while downing my second glass of whisky. A hunger deep inside me resided for many months with no opportunity for quenching. Suddenly a gorgeous peach appeared before me begging to be eaten. Mind oblivious to my body's actions, I was madly devouring the fruit with out any thought involved.

She met me at the airport.
'My boss, Mr Li,' (she pronounced it "Lee,") 'is very sorry he is not here to meet you personally. Something came up. He apologises, and hopes my coming in his place does not cause offence.' Large eyes dropped to the floor of the Arrivals Hall, as many of the other eyes, nearby, were on her, the cutie who was giving me the message. I couldn't imagine what she meant. If I had to choose between Li, a rather sneaky-looking rodent of a man I never really knew if I could trust, and this lovely little innocent, Miss Cheng ... I knew which one I'd take! (I didn't let her know this, of course.)

Blair looked around her new office and grinned widely.
She did it. She made VP of Sales.
The last quarter had been grueling, absolutely grueling. She and three other managers in the New York office had all been in the running, but everyone knew the real race for the promotion was between her and Ryan. They were the top performers for their division for the last two years, always coming in first and second. The positions flip flopped; sometimes she was first, sometimes she was second. But this time, when it mattered most, she had come out on top.
